Hitchcock sets the stage for suspense with The Birds by introducing Daniels and Brenner as well as their friendship, long before the action begins. Evan Hunter, also known under his pseudonym Ed McBain and a popular screenwriter, turned a version of Daphne Du Maurier's novella into a screenplay. Hitchcock employed electronic sound effects instead of musical scores to great effect. The bizarre real-life incident of herringwaters that smoked on Capitola, Calif., in 1961, believed to have occurred because of diatom poisoning in the digest of anchovies by the birds, causing extreme aggression, was studied by Hitchcock in preparation for the film.
