Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens better known by her stage name Queen Latifah, is an American rapper actress and singer. Queen Latifah is an American actress, rapper as well as a singer. Queen Latifah was born in and lived in Newark New Jersey the daughter of Rita an educator who worked at Irvington High School and Lancelot Owens, Jr. a police officer. Latifah's mother and father split when Latifah reached the age of ten. Latifah was born and brought up within Newark New Jersey attended Catholic school in Newark. When she was 8, her cousin gave her stage names Latifah which translates to gentle and loving in Arabic. Latifah's 5'10" height made her a powerful forward at high school. The song she performed was "Home" from The Wiz during a play at her highschool. Latifah began beatboxing with the rap group Ladies Fresh. Latifah became part of with the Flavor Unit in its original model, consisting of a team of MCs and DJ Mark The 45 King. Mark James aka the 45 King, made a recording of Queen Latifah's Princess of the Posse rap. The recorded was sent to Yo! MTV Raps Faddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was signed by Latifah following her hearing of the song. The singer released her debut single Wrath of My Madness, in 1988.
